Background of the Study
In Nigeria, poultry farming is a significant contributor to the agricultural sector, providing employment and food security. However, many poultry farmers in Kwara State face challenges such as fluctuating feed prices, disease outbreaks, and limited access to finance. Government intervention through policies and programs aimed at supporting the agricultural sector has been vital in promoting the sustainability of poultry farming businesses (Ogunlela, 2023). These interventions often include financial subsidies, training programs, and infrastructure development.
Despite these efforts, many poultry farmers still struggle to maintain sustainable operations. The effectiveness of government intervention in enhancing business sustainability remains unclear, especially considering the unique challenges faced by poultry farmers in different regions. This study seeks to evaluate the role of government intervention in ensuring the sustainability of poultry farmers in Kwara State.
Statement of the Problem
Although government interventions are designed to support poultry farmers, many farmers in Kwara State continue to face difficulties in maintaining profitable and sustainable businesses. This study seeks to identify the specific government interventions that have been most effective in supporting poultry farmers and to understand the factors that limit the success of these interventions.
Objectives of the Study
- To assess the effectiveness of government interventions in promoting business sustainability among poultry farmers in Kwara State.
- To identify the challenges poultry farmers face in benefiting from government interventions.
- To recommend strategies for improving government support to enhance the sustainability of poultry farms in Kwara State.
Research Questions
- What government interventions have been most effective in supporting the sustainability of poultry farms in Kwara State?
- What challenges do poultry farmers in Kwara State face in accessing government support programs?
- How can government interventions be improved to better support the sustainability of poultry farmers in Kwara State?
Research Hypotheses
- H0: Government interventions do not significantly contribute to the sustainability of poultry farms in Kwara State.
- H0: Limited access to government support programs does not significantly hinder the sustainability of poultry farms in Kwara State.
- H0: The lack of training and technical support does not significantly affect the sustainability of poultry farming businesses in Kwara State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on poultry farmers in Kwara State. Limitations may include challenges in accessing accurate data on government interventions and potential biases in farmer responses regarding the effectiveness of government programs.

- Government Intervention: Actions taken by the government to support and promote the growth and sustainability of businesses, especially in the agricultural sector.
- Business Sustainability: The ability of a business to continue operating profitably over the long term, despite economic, social, and environmental challenges.
- Poultry Farmers: Individuals or businesses involved in the breeding and raising of birds such as chickens, ducks, and turkeys for commercial purposes.
